The SCRUDRIVA (Sound field control using head-worn multi-driver arrangements) research project, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), focuses on the further development of conventional headphones to improve the reproduction of spatial sound scenes. The concept being researched is characterized by the use of a large number of small loudspeakers arranged in a hemispherical pattern around the ear, thus differing significantly from currently commercially available headphones. The possibilities, challenges, and limitations of this concept with regard to sound field shaping around the ear through the joined utilization of all loudspeakers are being investigated. The aim is to reproduce the sound field of real sound sources within the enclosed volume around the ear. This approach promises a personalized listening experience through the interaction of the reproduced sound field with the individual ear without requiring detailed prior knowledge of ear geometry.
